Book Review: The Wicked Will Rise (Dorothy Must Die #2)

Title: The Wicked Will Rise
Author: Danielle Paige
Series: Dorothy Must Die #2
Genre: YA Retelling
Release Date: March 2015
Source: I borrowed a physical copy from the public library

Goodreads summary:

In this dark, high-octane sequel to the New York Times bestselling Dorothy Must Die, Amy Gumm must do everything in her power to kill Dorothy and free Oz.

To make Oz a free land again, Amy Gumm was given a mission: remove the Tin Woodman’s heart, steal the Scarecrow’s brain, take the Lion’s courage, and then Dorothy must die...

But Dorothy still lives. Now the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked has vanished, and mysterious Princess Ozma might be Amy’s only ally. As Amy learns the truth about her mission, she realizes that she’s only just scratched the surface of Oz’s past—and that Kansas, the home she couldn't wait to leave behind, may also be in danger. In a place where the line between good and evil shifts with just a strong gust of wind, who can Amy trust—and who is really Wicked?

My review:

I couldn't wait to jump back into Amy's story of a wicked Dorothy. I was pleased that Nox had returned, but I was a little confused by all the new additions to the world of Oz.

It suddenly seems like there are people and places that play crucial roles that weren't even thought of in Dorothy Must Die. There is so much of Oz left to explore that I think cramming it all into the second book was just too much.

The romance is still a little uncertain, and I hope the love links are staked into the ground in the third book because while I don't think romance should ever be 50% of any book's plot except in the cases of romance novels, this romance is taking up about 2% of action and 50% of Amy's head. Let's even those numbers out.

The connection between Dorothy and Amy deepens and while it's explained a little bit more in this book, we are still left wondering how these two tie into the land of Oz. Just when I think Danielle Paige is going to be nice and give us a bite, she snatches away those answers! Even the author is wicked when it comes to revealing the plot secrets we want!

Overall, I liked the characters, but the setting was a little too much for me. Regardless, I will definitely be picking up book 3 to see what happens to Dorothy, the Wizard, Kansas, and of course Nox!

Rating: 4 / 5 stars
