Top Ten Tuesday: My five favorite dystopian novels

Top Ten Tuesday, by Broke and Bookish, on Amber, the Blonde Writer

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each Tuesday features a different list prompt where you will, as guessed, choose your top ten choices.

This week the theme is: Freebie! So I'm going to break down my favorite dystopian choices as a throwback to how this blog all started. Also, I am leaving off some amazing books (The Darkest Minds for ever and always!) because I haven't finished the entire series.

1. We by Yevgeny Zamyatin

This novel is the father of the dystopian genre, and it is one of the best (and least gory) of all the dystopian masterpieces. It's also a quick read; most readers should be able to knock it out in one or two sittings.

You can find my impression here.

2. Divergent by Veronica Roth

I finished this trilogy in one week if I'm not mistaken, long before I even thought of having a blog. The story was strong and typical of YA dystopian, but without the infuriating love triangle. I am beyond tired of those. I was also married to Veronica for 8 days before I read the end of Allegiant and filed for divorce. But don't worry, we're still cool.

3. Delirium by Lauren Oliver

I know I hate love triangles, but that doesn't mean I hate romance. Taking a dystopian society but writing what is essentially a romance novel was beautiful, heartbreaking, and a perfect understanding of young adults in relationships. This was teen romance done right.

4. Legend by Marie Lu

I fell in love with this story instantly. It's all politics, all the time, and it took me back to Zamyatin. There is enough romance and action to be exciting, but it will always remind you of governmental control and how that should never stray from the forefront of your mind.

5. The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

When I first read this, I said in my review that this novel is what The Hunger Games could have been with a little more purpose. Although I wanted a little more government, the sequel made up for it.

Which dystopian novels did you fall in love with? Any you think should be on this list?

    1. I had to search through my reviews to narrow mine down too. I know the Lunar Chronicles is considered dystopian on some planes because it's futuristic, but to me, it's only retelling.

Of course! Thanks for stopping by mine! :)
