Happy NaNoWriMo 2015!
It is Day 2 of NaNoWriMo 2015, and things are looking better after a very slow start yesterday. It took me five hours of work (and some procrastinating on Facebook and Twitter) to get 2,313 words on the page. All last week I would write about 800-1,000 words in a thirty minute session. Beginnings either take me an hour to sprint through, or weeks to trudge through.
With NaNoWriMo, I had about two days to get through it if I wanted to maintain my word count.
So far though, everything has been great! I'm finally at some action and the main character is showing more of her worth, which is fantastic. I can't wait to see how it deviates from my plan because as we all know, something is going to change.
This year I went back to YA and am writing a science fiction story about parallel universes. One of the most inspiring phrases I read while studying was, "Matter can only be arranged in a finite number of possibilities, which means it will repeat itself and create similar, or parallel, universes" (Brian Greene).
This spurred me to question the events of our history. What if the Bubonic Plague strengthened over time and stopped Europe from exploring other continents because it was busy rebuilding? What if that allowed the Asian countries to explore and for China to get a foot in the door with North America to conquer? What if the Native Americans were the ones in control of North America and not the White Man?
Brief Synopsis:
Capri, the 16 year old protagonist, stumbles upon Dr. Darian Webster's portal to a parallel universe. He is a physicist who plans to not only use this discovery to make him famous in their world, but to use his advanced technology and knowledge to control the parallel world. A civil war is looming between the Native Americans, and China is hoping to take advantage of it to gain a foothold after their 100 Years of Humiliation. Capri must choose between fighting Webster and risk not returning home, or getting back and risking the deaths of the ones who helped her get home.

I can't wait to see how the details unfold and am so happy to be putting my Asian Studies minor to good use. How is the writing going out there?
